It's tempting to put a new cat water fountain wherever there's a spare socket. But the most convenient spot for a person isn't always the most inviting one for a cat.
So where should a cat water fountain go? Start with your pet's habits and a few practical considerations: calm surroundings, safe power access, stability and cleaning.
Choose a calm area with an easy escape route
Many cats prefer to drink where they can see what's happening and walk away without being cornered. A quiet section of the living room may work better than the middle of a busy hallway. Avoid spots where the cat might be startled by a door, another pet or a noisy appliance.
Observe the areas your cat already chooses for resting and drinking. You don't need to put the fountain directly beside their bed, but a familiar and accessible space can make the new object feel less intrusive.
Keep drinking water away from the litter tray
Water and litter are best kept separate. If possible, give the fountain its own clean location rather than squeezing it beside the tray simply to keep all pet supplies together.
Separating water from the food station can also be worth trying. Some cats seem happier with drinking and eating areas apart. A small apartment may not allow much distance, but even different corners of a room can provide useful choice.
Plan the electrical connection carefully
A fountain with a pump usually needs power. Choose a stable, level surface and route the cable so people and pets won't trip over or pull it. Keep plugs and connections away from splashes or standing water. Don't run an extension lead through a damp area or leave a damaged cable in use.
Only place a fountain outdoors if its manufacturer explicitly permits that setting. Weather and electrical devices are not a combination to improvise with.
Should a cat fountain be near a window?
Not necessarily. Direct sunlight can warm the water, which may mean closer attention to its freshness. A cooler area away from radiators and harsh sunlight is often more manageable. You'll also want enough space above the fountain to remove its lid and clean it without moving furniture every time.
What if you live in a small flat?
Focus on safe access rather than finding a perfect room. A stable corner of the living area may work well, provided it's separated from the litter tray and isn't blocked by doors or heavy traffic. Check that your cat can approach the drinking area from more than one direction if they are nervous around other animals.
Multiple cats need more than one water spot
With two or more cats, placing every bowl and fountain in one corner can create competition even if the cats usually seem friendly. Add a separate water bowl elsewhere so no one needs to walk past another cat to drink. Our multi-cat water fountain guide explores this more fully.
Make daily checks easy
Can you see the water level? Can you reach the plug before cleaning? Will a spill be easy to notice and wipe up? These mundane details affect whether the fountain stays properly maintained.
JEIDAY FLOW has a visible water-level window and 2.2-litre reservoir. Place it where the window can be seen, the appliance stays stable and your cat has clear access.
If your cat has never used a fountain before, don't move it every few hours. Introduce it patiently with our gradual transition guide.
